Welcome to Colombo! En route, we'll visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and a spice garden. Witness caretakers' dedication to orphaned elephants. In Kandy, explore the city and its rich Buddhist heritage. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses a revered relic dating back to the 4th century, when the Buddha's tooth was brought to Sri Lanka hidden from sacrilegious hands in an Orissan princess' hair. The relic has grown in repute and holiness in Sri Lanka and throughout the Buddhist World. Immerse yourself in culture and history as you embark on your Sri Lankan adventure.
Following breakfast, head to Bentota and visit the renowned Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, managed by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Established in 1988, it has protected and released approximately 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild, aided by local fishermen who provide eggs. Eggs are buried in sand, and hatchlings are released into the sea at night after about 50 days. The hatchery cares for injured and disabled turtles, including albinos. Next, take a boat ride on the Madu Ganga River, home to pristine mangrove forests and abundant wildlife. You'll encounter diverse flora and fauna. Visit a Buddhist monastery on an island, and witness local activities like cinnamon production and prawn fishing. In the evening you will see the fishermen in their canoes lighting lanterns to attract the shellfish into their traps. It's a captivating journey through nature and culture through enchanting interactions with the local inhabitants.
